Nicosia to Launch "Night" Public Transport Service

The municipality of North Nicosia is preparing to launch a night-time public transport service to reduce the number of road accidents. The project will begin in May and will run as a pilot for three months.

Mehmet Harmancı, the mayor of the Turkish municipality of Nicosia (LTB), announced the service launch on social media. According to Harmancı, the current road safety situation has become a serious social issue that cannot be addressed by fines alone.

"Raising fines and the constant fear of losing loved ones have led us to seek alternative solutions. After negotiations with transport providers, LTB has reached a preliminary agreement to create an evening transport network—particularly in areas with heavy traffic," the mayor wrote.

The plan is for two buses to operate every day from 7:00 PM to 12:30 AM. The new service aims to offer a safer and more convenient travel option for residents, especially in the evening hours.

The mayor added that a meeting with business representatives and the road commission is scheduled for later this week to present the project.
