District Courts in Nicosia and Kyrenia Now Equipped with Elevators for People with Disabilities
Elevators have been installed at the District Courts of Nicosia and Kyrenia to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited mobility. The project, overseen by the Supreme Court, has been in development for nearly two years.
The initiative was first announced by the President of the Supreme Court, Bertan Özerdağ, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities last December. The goal is to create a “barrier-free court” system that ensures equal access to justice for everyone.
The elevator systems were supplied by a private contractor and are expected to be fully operational soon. The elevator at the Nicosia District Court was funded by the state budget, while the one in Kyrenia was financed by the Cyprus Turkish Orthopedic Disability Association.
The Supreme Court also announced plans to install a similar elevator at the Famagusta District Court as part of the ongoing “barrier-free court” initiative.
