In the Turkish district of Sındırgı (Balıkesir province), three significant tremors occurred in one night — with magnitudes of 4.8, 4.2, and 4.3 — triggering a wave of aftershocks, which reached 221 by the morning of August 25, 2025.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the first tremor of magnitude 4.8 occurred at 21:58, followed two minutes later at 22:00 by a 4.2 magnitude tremor, and another 14 minutes later at 22:14 with a magnitude of 4.3. These tremors were also felt in neighboring districts.

Throughout the night, Sındırgı was shaken by hundreds of weaker tremors — most below magnitude 3.0. By 07:00, the number of aftershocks reached 221, with the strongest being 4.2 in magnitude.

AFAD stated officially: "Currently, no negative consequences have been recorded. Surveying of the area is ongoing. We express our wishes for a swift recovery to affected citizens."

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported on social media that all emergency services immediately began inspections on site, and the situation remains under control. Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu also stated that “currently, there are no negative consequences” and wished safety to everyone.

On NTV, geology expert Professor Dr. Okan Tüysüz commented: “It is unusual for aftershocks to continue for 15 days and cover a wide area. This requires detailed investigation. Normally, after a fault, the drop is expected in the northern part and aftershocks in the south, but here they cover the fault edges and spread widely, indicating underground structural peculiarities. However, no major earthquake above 6.1 is expected in the region.”

He also recommended: “If homes were damaged by aftershocks, it is better not to return until the series of tremors ends. Panic does not help; one should wait until the aftershocks are over.”

Recall that on August 10, a major earthquake of magnitude 6.1 already occurred in this area. Since then, aftershocks have been periodically felt in the region.
