Reusable bags begin to be distributed in the TRNC ahead of the ban on plastic bags
In Northern Cyprus, preparations continue to reduce the use of single-use plastic. The Department of Environmental Protection under the relevant ministry has started distributing reusable fabric bags to residents as an alternative to conventional plastic bags.
The idea is to make the transition gradual: people are being encouraged in advance to adopt reusable solutions that are more convenient in everyday life and less harmful to nature. The department notes that this is part of a broader program aimed at reducing plastic pollution and microplastics.
As a reminder, starting from January 1, 2026, the TRNC plans to ban the sale and free distribution of shopping bags with a thickness of 15–50 microns.
