Cases of Violence Against Women Rise in TRNC
According to data published by the Statistical Institute for International Women's Day on March 8, the number of physical violence cases against women in Northern Cyprus has increased in recent years.
According to 2025 statistics, assault remains the most common crime (43.8%). This is followed by violations of the electronic communications law (9.4%), stalking and harassment (8.4%), offensive calls and messages (6.2%), and threats of violence (6%).
A total of 1,028 crimes against women were registered in 2025. The highest number of assault cases was recorded in Nicosia, while violations of the electronic communications law occurred more frequently in Girne.
Statistics also show a significant gender gap in the labor market. The male employment rate stands at 60%, while for women it is significantly lower at 35.3%.
In the public sector, men also hold the majority of senior positions: 64% compared to 36% for women. Furthermore, there are currently no female ministers in the Northern Cyprus government.
However, women in the TRNC live longer than men. Life expectancy in 2024 was 84.2 years for women and 80.3 years for men, which is above global averages.
Data also reveals that in 2024, the country registered 1,104 marriages and 1,047 divorces, with a total of 3,382 children born.
The head of the Statistical Institute, Sevuda Besimler, noted that gender equality should be viewed not only as a social goal but as an essential part of the country's economic and strategic development.
