A new species of tick has been discovered in Turkey

A new species of tick has been discovered in Turkey — Haemaphysalis longicornis.
This new species was found during scientific research on ticks in Turkey in collaboration with Dr. Kanday Doi from the Department of Wildlife Ecology at the Japanese Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute.
During the investigation of an insect found on a resident of Istanbul, it was established that it was the species Haemaphysalis longicornis, most likely originating from China.
"We have been regularly collecting samples from the same region since September. We observed the larval, nymph, and adult female stages. This shows that this species has now established itself in our country and begun to reproduce," said one of the scientists.
Haemaphysalis longicornis poses a significant threat to health globally. Professor Dr. Keskin emphasized the fact that this tick can carry more than 30 disease agents:
"This tick has a high vector potential, similar to Hyalomma marginatum. We are monitoring its population and the potential pathogens it carries. The project is being carried out with the support of our university and rectorate."
This species was previously widespread in China and Australia, and after 2017, it reached the USA, where it caused serious animal health issues regarding diseases.
