The Chamber of Mechanical Engineers, part of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Cypriot Engineers and Architects, has warned electric vehicle owners about the dangers of extreme summer heat. Experts note that during the summer months in Cyprus, air temperatures can reach 45 degrees, while the temperature inside the car can exceed 50 degrees.

Experts state that extreme temperatures can pose a certain danger both to the battery condition and to passenger safety in electric and hybrid vehicles, and listed their recommended precautions as follows:

“Avoid prolonged parking in the sun. Parking vehicles under direct sunlight, especially on asphalt surfaces, for long periods can increase the battery temperature to dangerous levels.

Shaded areas, covered parking or sheltered spots should be preferred. Charging under direct sunlight should definitely be avoided. Ensure that the battery cooling system is functioning properly.

Modern electric and hybrid vehicles are equipped with battery cooling systems. It is very important to check these systems during regular maintenance and, if necessary, inspect the coolant level.

Be cautious with high temperatures while driving and charging. Fast charging can raise battery temperature in high heat. Therefore, slow charging (AC) should be preferred when possible. Long trips should be avoided immediately after charging.

Protect electronic systems inside the vehicle. Interior displays, battery control units, and other sensitive components exposed to sunlight can be damaged. To lower interior temperature, window film, sunshades, and ventilation systems should be actively used.

Avoid aggressive driving demands. Driving styles requiring high power, such as hill climbs and rapid acceleration, can strain the battery system in hot weather. Caution should be exercised with such usage, and gradual acceleration should be preferred. Do not neglect vehicle software updates.

Battery Management Systems (BMS) may contain updates that help optimize temperature control. Therefore, firmware updates should be checked regularly. “Each vehicle manufacturer sets specific limits and recommendations for high-temperature conditions. The guidelines in the vehicle’s user manual should be strictly followed.”
