Only 19 Out of 127 Schools in the TRNC Made Seismic-Resistant in Two Years
Since the earthquake in Turkey on February 6, 2023, only 19 out of 127 schools in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) have been renovated to meet seismic safety standards. In many schools where buildings were deemed unsafe, classes are still being held in temporary structures.
This update was shared by Feliz Besim, a member of the opposition Republican Turkish Party, during a recent parliamentary session discussing the TRNC’s budget.
According to Besim, almost two years after the tragedy in Turkey, funds were allocated for reinforcing 127 schools in the TRNC. However, only 19 schools have been renovated so far.
A protocol for inspecting and assessing school buildings was signed by the Ministry of Education of the TRNC and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Civil Engineers (IMO). Some buildings were found to be unsafe. In total, nine schools were classified as severely damaged by IMO, while others also required repairs and reinforcement.
It was also noted that the Earthquake Committee has yet to receive safety reports for 66 schools, and the status of 58 additional schools is still under review.
Furthermore, following last year’s earthquakes, some schools were temporarily relocated to makeshift buildings.
The ongoing delay in reconstruction and the continuation of education in trailers have repeatedly been criticized by the Turkish Cypriot teachers' unions, which have held protests in front of the Ministry of Education’s building.
It’s worth mentioning that during yesterday’s meeting, the Ministry of National Education’s budget was approved with a majority vote, totaling 16 billion 700 million 959 thousand Turkish lira.
