72 Traffic Accidents Reported in TRNC in One Week: 22 People Injured
total of 72 traffic accidents were recorded across the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) within one week, leaving 22 people injured, according to the weekly traffic report issued by the Police General Directorate covering the period from 2 to 8 February.
According to the report, 15 accidents resulted in injuries, while 57 incidents caused material damage only. The total financial loss was estimated at 5,540,100 Turkish lira.
Police identified the following primary causes:
- speeding — 23 cases;
- failure to stop at intersections — 19;
- careless driving — 11;
- following too closely — 9;
- other causes — 10 cases.
Accidents by district:
The highest number of accidents was recorded in:
- Nicosia — 23,
- Famagusta — 18,
- Kyrenia — 18,
- Güzelyurt — 10,
- İskele — 3.
Traffic inspections:
During the same period, police checked 22,335 drivers nationwide. Legal action was taken against 3,551 drivers for various traffic violations.
As part of the inspections:
- 337 vehicles were taken off the road;
- 12 drivers were arrested.
The most common offences included speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, using a mobile phone while driving, lack of vehicle inspection or insurance, and failure to comply with traffic signs and safety regulations.
Police once again urged drivers to obey traffic rules, stressing that excessive speed and inattentive driving remain the leading causes of road accidents.
