Summer beach cleaning campaign completed in Famagusta, İskele, and Tatlısu
The beach cleaning campaign, carried out during the summer season in Famagusta, İskele, Yeni Boğaziçi, and Tatlısu, has officially concluded, the office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu announced on September 5, 2025. The work was voluntary, involving youth teams, and included two clean-ups per day — in the morning and evening.
According to Minister Ataoğlu, the main goal of the campaign was to keep beaches clean, ensure a safe and healthy space for visitors, and promote environmental awareness in society. Despite regular clean-ups and educational activities, the desired result was not fully achieved due to careless actions by some visitors, he noted.
Ataoğlu emphasized that updated fines, awareness campaigns, and volunteer initiatives alone do not solve the problem: environmental responsibility is a matter of habit and culture. He also noted that during inspections, foreign tourists showed greater care for cleanliness, while most violations were committed by local residents.
The ministry announced plans to strengthen measures to increase environmental awareness and impose stricter penalties for pollution. Residents of Northern Cyprus are advised to follow beach waste disposal rules and support initiatives to preserve the beaches.
