6.0 Magnitude Earthquake in the Mediterranean Felt in Cyprus

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Crete late last night, with tremors also being felt in Cyprus.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Kandilli Observatory, the earthquake occurred around 2:00 AM. The epicenter was located approximately 155 kilometers from the Datça region in Turkey’s Muğla province, and 162 kilometers east of Heraklion on the island of Crete, Greece, at a depth of about 20.41 kilometers.

The tremors were felt in Muğla and nearby provinces, including Balıkesir, Aydın, İzmir, and Antalya. Residents of Cyprus also reported feeling the aftershocks.

Initial reports suggest that no injuries have been reported, and there has been no significant damage or material loss. However, the earthquake did cause brief panic among the local population. AFAD and other relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
