Residents of the village near Guzelyurt raise the alarm due to the invasion of stray dogs
The village of Kalkanlı in the Guzelyurt district in northern Cyprus has been subjected to an invasion of stray dogs. The problem has remained unresolved for several years.
The public's attention to the alarming situation with stray animals in the region was brought by the Animal Protection Association of Guzelyurt. In their statement, animal rights activists criticized the governor of the district for inaction.
In a written statement, the president of the Guzelyurt Animal Protection Association, Rana Sarro, stated that the issue of stray dogs in the village of Kalkanlı in the Guzelyurt district has been ongoing for four years.
It is claimed that the Minister of Internal Affairs had previously instructed the Guzelyurt Animal Protection Association to lease land for the construction of a shelter, but the governors of the Central District and Guzelyurt District did not comply with the directive.
According to Rana Sarro, shelters exist in all districts, except in the Guzelyurt district. Currently, under his care, about 250 abandoned dogs are registered with the Veterinary Department.
According to the Animal Protection Law, the municipality is obliged to build a shelter, but the Guzelyurt municipality has not built a shelter in the district for 25 years. Moreover, they are trying to hinder this socially responsible project of voluntary philanthropists by not allocating land for construction, said the head of the Association.
