Residents of Northern Cyprus call for stronger police and judicial measures due to rising crime
In Northern Cyprus, residents expressed concern over the rise in crimes — including drugs, violence, thefts, attempted murders, and assaults — and called on authorities to adopt stricter control measures. This was reported on November 24, 2025.
According to those surveyed, it is necessary to strengthen the police and judicial system by increasing staff and updating vehicle fleets and equipment. Residents note that with the number of private cars reportedly approaching half a million, meeting the needs of key institutions should be a priority. At the same time, it is emphasized that even with current resources, the police and judiciary achieve notable results.
Proposals include tougher penalties and expanded inspections, stricter entry and exit controls, and strengthened intelligence operations. There is a noted shortage of personnel to collect fines issued by stationary radars, and the need for additional staff as well as the implementation of more modern technical means.
Some residents called for requiring a criminal record certificate for non-citizens upon entry, detecting and deporting individuals staying illegally. It is also suggested to speed up judicial processes and engage the public more actively in reporting offenses.
