Museum of Archaeology and Natural History
Description
The Museum of Archaeology and Nature, located in the center of Güzelyurt, was opened in 1979 after the restoration of a building that served as the residence of the Metropolitan until 1974.
On the ground floor of the museum is the natural history section, where visitors can see taxidermied animals and birds, as well as unique specimens of various breeds and examples of flora and fauna that were once found or lived on the island of Cyprus.
The second floor features exhibits from the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages, as well as items discovered during excavations in the ancient cities of Soli and Vouni, including golden wreaths found in Soli in 2005. The museum rooms are numbered, with each dedicated to a specific period in the island’s development and historical past.
Ancient bracelets and golden jewelry, treasures found in Soli, creations of ancient craftsmen, and other exhibits are presented to visitors. Despite their excellent preservation, many artifacts date back to the 4th or 5th centuries BC.
One of the most important and ancient exhibits is a carved statue of the goddess of fertility, dating back to the 2nd century AD, found in the Salamis area in 1980.
Visitors who wish to see the unique exhibits can visit the museum any day except Sunday. It is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.
