History of the holiday
Social Resistance Day unites three major historical events that played a role in shaping the political and social identity of Turkish Cypriots:
- The Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571. This moment is considered the beginning of the formation of the Turkish community on the island.
- The establishment of the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) in 1958. This underground movement played a significant role in protecting the Turkish Cypriot population during tense interethnic conflicts.
- The establishment of the TRNC Security Forces Command in 1976. After the events of 1974, this structure became the foundation of Northern Cyprus’s defense system.
The holiday emphasizes generational continuity and the importance of the struggle for security and self-governance.
