Public and Religious Holidays in Northern Cyprus
In Northern Cyprus, government institutions and most private businesses do not operate during official holidays. These days are considered public holidays, and life on the island slows down — schools, banks, municipal services, and even many shops close. The TRNC holiday calendar includes both national dates inherited from Turkey and Islamic religious holidays, the dates of which change each year according to the lunar calendar.
Public and national holidays in the TRNC
Most official holidays in Northern Cyprus coincide with Turkish holidays. They are dedicated to significant events in the history of the Turkish Republic and Northern Cyprus.
- January 1 — New Year
- April 23 — National Sovereignty and Children's Day
- May 1 — Labour Day
- May 19 — Atatürk Memorial, Youth and Sports Day
- July 20 — Peace and Freedom Day
- August 1 — Social Resistance Day
- August 30 — Victory Day
- October 29 — Republic Day of Turkey
- November 15 — Republic Day (TRNC anniversary)
These dates are fixed annually and are accompanied by ceremonial events, parades, concerts in main squares, and festive addresses by the president.
Religious holidays
In addition to public holidays, Northern Cyprus observes major Islamic holidays. They do not have fixed dates and shift by approximately 10–11 days each year because they are calculated according to the lunar calendar.
- Eid al-Fitr — the festival of breaking the fast, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. In 2026, celebrations will begin on March 20.
- Eid al-Adha — the festival of sacrifice, one of the most significant in the Islamic world. In 2026, it will begin on May 27.
On these days, Muslims visit mosques, see relatives, and make donations to those in need. Government institutions also close, and streets are decorated with festive symbols.
Celebration features in Northern Cyprus
On public holidays, government offices, banks, and schools do not operate. Private businesses often take a break only on the first day of the holiday, especially in tourist areas. Public transport operates on a reduced schedule, while borders and airports remain open.
If you live in Cyprus or plan a trip, it is recommended to check the dates of religious holidays in advance — they may affect the operation of post offices, medical centers, and other services. Many shops organize sales or themed promotions during these days in honor of the holidays.
