Schengen Visa in Northern Cyprus — Application Rules and Required Documents

Updated: 2 months ago

Although Northern Cyprus is not recognized by most countries, it is possible to obtain a Schengen visa directly in the TRNC. Several EU countries conduct consular operations through their embassies in Lefkoşa (Nicosia). Below, we will review where applications are accepted, what documents are required, and what conditions must be met.

General information about the Schengen visa in Northern Cyprus

It is possible to obtain a Schengen visa in Northern Cyprus, but applications are only submitted through EU consulates operating on the island.

Applications are accepted, in particular, through the Visa Section of the German Embassy in Lefkoşa (Visa Application Desk), if the main destination country is Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, or Norway.

The Embassy of Italy in Nicosia also accepts applications, and under certain conditions — other consular offices. The procedures and categories of applicants change periodically, so it is recommended to check the requirements on the official consulate websites before applying.

Main application requirements

To apply for a Schengen visa in Northern Cyprus, you need:

  • legal stay in the TRNC — a TRNC ID, valid residence permit, or other document confirming status is required;
  • personal submission of documents — biometric data (fingerprints) must be provided;
  • travel insurance with coverage of at least €30,000 for the entire trip.

Without legal stay in Northern Cyprus, it is impossible to submit an application — a border stamp alone is not considered sufficient grounds.

Documents for a Schengen visa

The standard set of documents usually includes:

  • completed application form (VIDEX);
  • passport + copies of previous visas;
  • document confirming legal stay in Northern Cyprus;
  • photo 3.5 × 4.5;
  • airline and hotel reservations, or an invitation from the host;
  • bank statement for 6 months or a sponsor letter;
  • proof of address in Northern Cyprus (Ikametgâh, rental agreement, title deed);
  • criminal record certificate (Conviction Record) and Entry / Exit from the police;
  • family documents (if necessary);
  • student certificates and transcript — for students.

The consulate reserves the right to request additional documents depending on the itinerary, purpose of the trip, and country of application.

Processing times and costs

Standard processing time — around 20–30 working days, but it may increase during travel seasons. It is recommended to submit documents 3 months before the planned trip.

  • consular fee: €90 (from 12 years) / €45 (6–12 years);
  • insurance: from €10 to €45 depending on duration;
  • appointment for submission is done online only.
