Kykkos Monastery in the Troodos Mountains

Updated: 8 hours ago

The Holy Monastery of Kykkos is located in the Troodos Mountains, in the Marathasa Valley (Republic of Cyprus), approximately 13 km from the village of Pedoulas, at an altitude of about 1,318 m. Entrance to the monastery is free. Visiting hours for tourists are usually as follows: November — May: 10:00–16:00, June — October: 10:00–18:00; the monastery may be closed on public holidays. The monastery museum operates separately: a ticket is usually 5 EUR (often 3 EUR for groups).

History of Kykkos Monastery

The monastery is dedicated to Panagia (the Virgin Mary) and is especially revered due to the icon of the Mother of God, traditionally attributed to the Apostle Luke. According to legend, the Cypriot hermit Isaiah healed the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos and, as a reward, requested that the icon and funds for founding the monastery be sent to Cyprus.

Over the centuries, the monastery has repeatedly suffered from fires and has been rebuilt; therefore, the complex combines elements from different eras. In the 19th century, following serious damage, the monastery was restored again, and restorations and updates of internal paintings and mosaics continued into the 20th and 21st centuries.

Kykkos Monastery today

Today, the complex is well-maintained and open to visitors. The inner courtyard and galleries are decorated with mosaics and frescoes. On the grounds, there is a church shop and a museum where you can see icons, manuscripts, church utensils, and other exhibits from the monastery's collection.

Some pilgrims stay in guest houses built near the monastery complex. The shop often sells monastic products (including local beverages), and major religious dates in August and September typically attract more visitors.

How to get there

Public Transport

The monastery is located high in the Troodos Mountains, so there is usually no direct "city" transport to the gates. A practical reference point is to take a bus to the village of Pedoulas and then take a taxi (or arrange a transfer in advance). Route No. 81 runs from Nicosia to the mountain region (depending on the season and schedules), but check the current trips and return times before your journey.

Excursions

Excursions to Kykkos Monastery are sold at many tourist points. If it is more convenient to book online in advance, you can view options (individual and group) on Tripster or Sputnik8.

Car

Traveling by car is usually the most convenient: you can combine Kykkos with Troodos villages, viewpoints, and trails.

If you don't have your own car, you can compare rental options from local providers on Localrent.

Taxi and Transfer

A taxi to the mountains is convenient if you are traveling with family or do not want to drive on winding mountain roads. It is often more cost-effective to book a round-trip transfer with waiting time in advance. Options with a choice of car class can be checked on GetTransfer.
