Divorce in Cyprus is a procedure that stands out for its simplicity and transparency, especially if you had a civil marriage. Thanks to simplified legislation, couples can officially dissolve their relationship without facing bureaucratic obstacles.

Divorce after a civil marriage

If your marriage was registered at a municipality in the Republic of Cyprus, the divorce process will be as straightforward as possible. Unlike a church marriage, which involves the diocesan court, the dissolution of a civil marriage is handled by secular authorities — at the same municipality where the marriage was registered.

The main condition is the absence of minor children and the consent of both parties. In this case, divorce does not require a court hearing, and the documents are processed administratively.

Divorce timelines and conditions

With mutual consent of the spouses, the divorce is processed within 2–3 months. This period includes administrative processing of the application and verification of documents. If one spouse does not agree, the process may take longer, but it still remains simpler than in most European countries.

In some municipalities, accelerated processing of the application is possible if all necessary documents are submitted at once and there are no property disputes. You can get advice on timelines directly from the local municipality or from a family law lawyer.

How to submit a divorce application

The application is submitted to the municipality where your marriage was registered. The procedure includes the following steps:

  • Filling out a divorce application form.
  • Providing originals and copies of the marriage certificate and passports.
  • Confirming the consent of the other spouse (if the divorce is mutual).
  • Paying the administrative fee (approximately €30–50, depending on the municipality).

After reviewing the documents, the municipality notifies both parties of the official divorce date. The divorce certificate is issued by the same authority where you registered the marriage and is recognized outside Cyprus (if necessary, with an apostille).

Tip: If you do not reside in Cyprus but your marriage was registered here, you can process the divorce remotely through a trusted representative or a lawyer with power of attorney. For consultation, you can contact the municipality or a lawyer.
