Car Owners in Cyprus May Lose MOT Certificate Over Unreplaced Takata Airbags from October 3
In Cyprus, car owners whose vehicles are listed for Takata airbag replacement risk losing their vehicle’s MOT certificate starting October 3, 2025. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis announced this following a meeting of the Road Safety Council.
Since August 1, the ministry has run an information campaign reminding the public that the period for recalling and replacing airbags expires on October 3—exactly eight months after the lists were published in February. If the necessary replacement has not been carried out by an official dealer by that date, the MOT certificate will be canceled, and driving the vehicle on roads will become illegal.
The ministry notes low public interest in scheduling replacements, even though dealers have available service slots. Citizens are advised to contact the Department of Road Transport (ΤΟΜ) for individual arrangements if no slots are available.
It is emphasized that airbag replacement is only recognized when performed at official manufacturer service centers. Replacements done by private mechanics are not accepted, as this increases the risk of installing faulty or potentially dangerous parts.
For all vehicle owners under the Takata recall program, it is recommended to contact a dealer soon to avoid prohibition of vehicle use and possible fines. According to the Transport Ministry, timely compliance helps reduce the risk of traffic accidents related to faulty safety system components.
