More than half of electricity demand in Cyprus was met with solar energy
More than 50% of the total electricity demand was met through solar panels and biomass between 9:00 and 17:00 over the past week.
In the first week of summer, total demand exceeded 700 MW/h during peak hours, reaching 768 MW on Friday. To meet the demand, traditional generation was reduced to about 250–300 MW, while photovoltaic generation fluctuated around 450 MW.
Yesterday was an exception: electricity demand remained low (673 MW at peak hours), and distributed generation exceeded traditional generation only between 9:00 and 14:30.
Since the beginning of the month, the TSO has issued three orders to the Distribution System Operator (DSO) to shut down photovoltaic systems with a capacity of 0–499 kWp due to a recorded drop in demand.
According to the DSO statement, this was necessary to ensure system safety.
We remind you that tomorrow, the issue of increasing EAC prices will be discussed. It is reported that the increase will lead to a €5 rise in household bills over a two-month period (with an estimated consumption of 700 kilowatts).
