Former Cypriot leader George Vassiliou in critical condition
Former Cypriot leader George Vassiliou has been hospitalized since January 6 and is in critical condition at the Nicosia General Hospital in South Nicosia, Cyprus.
Today, the Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, visited the hospital and received information from doctors about Vassiliou’s condition. Okypy spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou reported that the 94-year-old Vassiliou is in critical condition and has been diagnosed with heart failure.
George Vassiliou is also known as a businessman; he was the third President of Cyprus from 1988 to 1993 and led the process of the island’s accession to the European Union.
Vassiliou is survived by his wife Androulla Vassiliou and three children. According to the source, Androulla Vassiliou served as European Commissioner for Health from March 2008 to February 2010, and until November 2014 as Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.
