Death Toll from Viral Infections in Cyprus Rises to 12: First Woman Dies from RSV

The number of deaths from flu and viral infections in Cyprus have increased to 12 this season. The first woman has died from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), marking the latest death.

A representative from the state health system, OKYPY, shared this information during the “Alpha Kalimera” program. Of the 12 deaths, 10 were caused by Influenza A. Earlier reports also noted the death of a two-month-old baby who passed away from RSV after being hospitalized at Makarios Hospital.

Eight of the 12 victims died in public hospitals, while two others passed away in private clinics.

The spokesperson explained that most of the deceased were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions.

However, it is worth noting that among the 10 patients currently in intensive care at public hospitals, some are relatively young, ranging from 33 to around 40 years old.

Since the start of the year, Cypriot hospitals have been under increasing strain due to a surge in seasonal respiratory infections.

Hospital occupancy rates remain high, with healthcare workers managing four different viruses, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV.
