Diver Snaps Selfie with Shark off the Coast of Paphos
A diving enthusiast in Cyprus had an unexpected encounter with a shark during a recent dive—and managed to capture a selfie with the predator. The footage of this rare meeting was posted on TikTok by user Anastasios Kavallaris.
The incident occurred just 200 meters from the shore of Paphos, at a depth of about 15 meters. Based on the video, the diver came face to face with a sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus), a species that has been spotted in the area before.
Fortunately, the encounter ended peacefully. The diver remained calm and successfully captured some impressive shots with the shark.
The sand tiger shark, sometimes called the gray nurse shark, is part of the Carcharhinidae family and is commonly found in tropical oceans worldwide, at depths up to 280 meters. This species is also commercially fished, as its meat is highly valued.
