Environmentalists: Cyprus is Unprepared for the Climate Crisis
Cyprus ranks seventh out of 47 countries with the highest rates of extreme climate conditions and fifth in Europe. The island, however, is not ready to face the coming climate crisis.
Professor Şerife Gündüz, Director of the Environmental Research Center at the International Final University (UFÜ), expressed this concern in an interview with Kibris Postasi. She discussed the impact of climate change and the readiness of Cyprus to tackle this challenge.
Professor Gündüz highlighted the role of environmental factors—such as deforestation, improper land use, and industrialization—in accelerating climate change.
Reflecting on the recent floods in Spain’s Valencia region, Professor Gündüz emphasized that this event demonstrates how climate change is driving extreme weather across the globe.
She added that this situation requires urgent actions to improve climate adaptability and resilience on the island.
