Farmers will bring out tractors and hold a protest outside the House of Europe in Nicosia on Thursday.
The Pancyprian Organization of Grain Producers announced the start of actions involving tractors and the participation of its members in a protest to be held next Thursday outside the House of Europe in Nicosia.
In its statement, the organization notes that preliminary discussions of the new framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and published information indicate a revision of direct payment principles with a gradual reduction of subsidies for farmers. According to the organization, this raises serious concerns regarding the sustainability of agriculture, particularly in Cyprus.
The organization also points to long-standing issues affecting the productivity and viability of agricultural holdings. The statement emphasizes that delays in leasing state and forest land, as well as in subleasing Turkish Cypriot agricultural land to professional farmers, have led to the inability of the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization to disburse subsidies that constitute arrears from last year.
The Pancyprian organization calls on all farmers to participate en masse, in an organized and responsible manner, at the designated assembly points. In the Larnaca district, gathering points are: Menogeia Stadium, the overpass near the “Panorio” reception hall, Dromolaxia, the Panagia Ambelion overpass, Aradippou, and the area opposite the “Stavmani” reception hall in Afi enou. In the Famagusta district — the Liopetri overpass. In the Nicosia district — Kokkinochoria, near Papafilippou.
