Phishing in Cyprus: Residents receive fake electricity bills
According to the Cyprus Electricity Authority (ΑΗΚ), citizens are warned about a new wave of fraud. Recently, residents have begun receiving emails in which scammers, pretending to be ΑΗΚ, demand payment for allegedly outstanding electricity bills.
The emails state that the recipient has an unpaid invoice and suggest scanning a QR code for quick payment. However, these messages are unrelated to ΑΗΚ and represent a classic phishing scheme.
The energy company emphasizes that such emails may contain links to fake websites or attachments with malicious content. Citizens are advised to be especially careful and never follow suspicious links or scan QR codes from doubtful emails.
ΑΗΚ advises:
— check invoices and balances only via the official website or mobile app of the company;
— do not open attachments or download files from unverified sources;
— in case of doubt, contact ΑΗΚ exclusively through official channels.
The company reminds that all official information about balances and payments is provided only through its own services, and any other emails with similar demands should be ignored.
