Five members of the Greek Cypriot community, who have been held in detention in the occupied northern part of the island for about a month, were brought before the so-called “Trikomo District Court” on the morning of August 21st; later, they are expected to appear before a “military court” in Nicosia, according to sources in the north of the island.

Reportedly, three charges have been brought against one of the detained spouses: causing alarm, violating private property, and breaching personal data laws. Three others are facing two charges: causing alarm and violating property rights. Two of the five have been remanded in custody for up to three months until the trial begins. The lawyer representing the detainees, Ugur Julhaoglu, stated that they do not admit to the charges brought against them.

According to local sources, case files regarding the charges of causing alarm and violating private property are ready, while a separate file for the breach of personal data is being prepared. This latter charge, considered the most serious, has been brought against only two of the individuals. The court has combined the three incidents into a single case; the preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 28th.

What This Means for Cyprus Residents: The situation highlights the risk of detention in the occupied areas. Travelers to the north of the island are advised to exercise caution; in the event of detention, contact the law enforcement authorities of the Republic of Cyprus and consular services.
