Citizens and farmers remain without water: government criticized for inaction by Ministry of Agriculture

Amid the ongoing water shortage affecting homes and agriculture, member of the Central Committee of the AKEL party, Christina Nicolaou, accused the government and the Minister of Agriculture of inaction and the lack of a concrete plan to solve the problem.
In a written statement, Nicolaou emphasized that “citizens do not need history lessons, they need solutions,” pointing out that the announced projects remain only on paper, while water reserves are rapidly decreasing.
According to her, the authorities are once again shifting responsibility to others instead of acknowledging their own mistakes. Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayiotu, who stated that the water shortage is “a temporary problem that has existed since the time of Saint Helena,” was criticized for attempting to justify the current situation by referring to the past.
“Ambitious plans are constantly announced, but measures are never implemented. The vague deadlines proposed by the ministry reassure no one,” the statement said.
She reminded that drought in Cyprus has lasted since 2022, yet until April 2024 the government had not presented a single concrete package of measures. “This proves that the authorities had no plan or preparation for the crisis,” emphasized the AKEL representative.
According to her, the water crisis requires immediate and targeted action, not promises of long-term projects and historical references.
