Italian frigate off the coast of Cyprus: why the Federico Martinengo arrived in the region

The European military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean continues to strengthen. The Italian frigate ITS Federico Martinengo, one of the most modern ships in the Italian Navy, has arrived in the Cyprus area.
According to the Italian agency ANSA, the ship was sent to strengthen the island's defense amid tensions arising from the war around Iran. There are about 160 military personnel on board the frigate, and the mission itself is coordinated with European partners — Spain, France, and the Netherlands.
A modern multi-purpose ship
The Federico Martinengo belongs to the FREMM class of multi-purpose frigates — one of the most technologically advanced types of warships created in Europe. The ship was launched in 2017 and joined the fleet in 2018.
Its main characteristics:
- length — about 145 meters
- displacement — about 6,700 tons
- maximum speed — up to 27 knots
- sailing range — about 6,800 nautical miles
- crew — up to 200 people
The frigate is equipped with a modern combat management system and multifunctional radars that allow for simultaneous tracking of air, sea, and underwater targets.
How the frigate is armed
The ship is capable of performing a wide range of tasks — from air defense to anti-submarine warfare and escorting civilian vessels.
Its armament includes:
- Aster-15 and Aster-30 anti-aircraft missiles
- Teseo (Otomat) anti-ship missiles
- 127 mm long-range naval artillery mount
- 76 mm gun for missile defense
- MU90 anti-submarine torpedoes
- electronic warfare systems.
The frigate can also carry two NH90 anti-submarine helicopters, which are used for submarine searching, reconnaissance, and strike operations.
Experience in hotspot operations
The Federico Martinengo already has experience working in difficult and tense regions.
Last year, the ship participated in the European naval operation EUNAVFOR Aspides in the Red Sea. The mission's main task was to protect merchant shipping from Houthi attacks and escort commercial vessels through one of the most dangerous sea routes.
Similar operations include:
- escorting civilian ships
- countering missile and drone attacks
- maritime patrolling and reconnaissance
- participation in international naval missions.
Why it appeared near Cyprus
The arrival of the Italian frigate is part of a broader European operation to strengthen security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Against the backdrop of tensions in the Middle East, European countries are gradually increasing their military presence around Cyprus. Allied ships perform surveillance tasks, protect sea communications, and provide possible support for security operations.
Thus, the appearance of the Federico Martinengo off the island's coast is not just a rotation of a warship. It is another element of the emerging system of European presence in a region that has increasingly been at the center of international crises in recent years.
