Fire Risk in Cyprus Increases Due to Ongoing Drought
The Fire Service of the Republic of Cyprus has issued a warning about the heightened risk of wildfires as dry weather continues to grip the island. According to the Department of Meteorology, the exceptionally dry conditions are expected to persist until March 21.
Authorities Urge Caution
The Fire Service is calling on the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid any activities that could ignite a fire. This includes using tools or agricultural machinery that generate heat, sparks, or flames. Discarding lit cigarettes or other hot objects outdoors is strictly prohibited.
Special attention should also be given to preventing fires caused by exhaust emissions from power generators or water pumps in rural areas.
Fire Regulations and Emergency Contacts
Authorities remind residents that burning grass, branches, or waste—as well as lighting any type of fire outside designated barbecue areas—is strictly forbidden. Anyone who notices smoke or fire should immediately call 112 or 1407.
