Elected Members of the European Parliament from Cyprus Officially Assume Office
On Tuesday, June 11, the official inauguration of six newly elected Members of the European Parliament from Cyprus took place, marking the commencement of their five-year term.
The ceremony announcing the six MEPs, elected during the voting on June 9, was held at the "Filoxenia" Conference Center in Nicosia at 8:30 in the morning.
Elikkos Ilias, the head of the Electoral Commission, announced that the parliamentary mandates following the elections were distributed as follows: DISY receives two seats in the European Parliament, while AKEL, DIKO, and ELAM each secure one seat, with an additional mandate going to an independent candidate.
The elected Members of the European Parliament for a five-year term are: Lucas Fourlas and Michalis Hadjipantel (DISY), Georgos Georgiou (AKEL), Georgos Georgiou (ELAM), Kostas Mavrides (DIKO), and independent candidate Fidias Panayiotou.
Following the recent elections, the DISY party remains in the lead, retaining its two seats in the European Parliament. Conversely, AKEL has lost one of its two seats, while ELAM has gained representation in the European Parliament for the first time.
Next, the announcement of the elected local leaders will take place, with ceremonies conducted by the elected prefects of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta, and Kyrenia.
