Cyprus Cabinet allocates €1.5 million to support farmers affected by bad weather

The Cabinet of Ministers of Cyprus has approved an aid package worth €1.515 million intended for farmers who suffered losses due to extreme weather conditions during the 2024/2025 agricultural season.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture, the decision was made at the cabinet meeting on September 17 after the relevant proposal was presented. The aid will cover damages to crops such as olives, avocados, bananas, artichokes, winter potatoes, citrus fruits and loquats. A final payment is also foreseen for potato producers affected by storm “Korval” earlier this year.
The Ministry emphasized that the aim of this package is to provide real support to farmers, contribute to stability and ensure the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector. Payments will be made gradually, starting in the coming days, and are expected to be completed by the end of October 2025. It is noted that this schedule represents a significant acceleration compared to previous years, when similar compensations were usually distributed in December.
Funding will be provided either under the National Framework for State Aid in case of adverse weather events, or under the EU de minimis regulation (EU Regulation 1408/2013), depending on the case. The statement also notes that with the approval of this decision, the cycle of payments for the specified crops and damages is completed. Any new losses later this year will be considered separately through risk management schemes overseen by the Agricultural Insurance Organization.
Farmers seeking additional information may contact the Risk Management Department of the Agriculture Department at 22408540 or their local district agricultural offices.
