Photo and video enforcement cameras have not reduced road fatalities in Cyprus
In a column published by the newspaper “Simerini” on 7 January 2026, author Kyriakos Polycarpou stated that photo and video enforcement cameras are not a panacea for reducing the number of road deaths in Cyprus.
The article presents statistical data: in 2025, the number of people killed in road traffic accidents amounted to 45, which is 10% higher compared to 2024 (41 fatalities) and 30% higher compared to 2023 (34 fatalities).
The author notes that the introduction of cameras was accompanied by statements about control of the situation and an expected reduction in accidents; however, the actual figures do not confirm such a decrease. The column also points out that the use of cameras was accompanied by increased fines and, in some cases, unjustified payments for road users.
As possible measures to reduce the number of accidents, the author proposes fostering road awareness from an early age and strengthening responsibility on the roads. Specific proposals include tougher penalties for speeding, running red lights, using a mobile phone while driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
