Surveillance Cameras to Be Installed on All Buses in Nicosia and Larnaca
Surveillance cameras and additional security measures are being installed on buses in Nicosia and Larnaca as part of an initiative to combat vandalism and other crimes on public transport routes in Cyprus.
Alexandros Kamberos, the Commercial Director of CPT, explained on the Alpha Kalimera show that cameras will be placed on all buses operating on urban routes in both Nicosia and Larnaca.
Additionally, security measures will be increased on some student routes, provided the Ministry of Transport approves the plan.
Kamberos stated that the cameras will be activated in the coming days, following the completion of all necessary procedures.
It is important to note that the Limassol district has not made a similar request for such measures.
The decision to install the surveillance cameras came after an incident in early January when a group of individuals threw a lit flare into a bus.
The decision to implement the cameras was made in early February, with the aim of protecting the company’s assets while ensuring passenger privacy is maintained.
Irini Loizidou, the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, outlined the operational guidelines for the cameras.
The system will use a black box, and all data will be stored in encrypted form. No company employee will have access to this data, and there will be no remote access to the footage. Audio recording will also be disabled.
Access to the data will only be granted to authorized police personnel if there is a legitimate reason, and only after a formal request for an investigation has been made.
If no incidents requiring the review of the footage occur, the data will be automatically deleted within 48 hours.
