Cyprus is preparing a UNESCO application: the valleys of the Xeros and Diarizos rivers may receive international status

In Cyprus, a contract has been signed to prepare an official dossier for the inclusion of the valleys of the Xeros and Diarizos rivers in the UNESCO network as a Biosphere Reserve.
The project covers an area of about 510 km² and includes 32 communities of the Paphos region, as well as several abandoned Turkish Cypriot villages located along the riverbeds. Preparation of the application will take 18 months and will be carried out in close cooperation with state authorities, scientific organizations and local communities.
The aim of the initiative is not only to highlight the ecological and biological value of the region, but also to reflect its historical heritage, cultural identity and potential for sustainable development. The project is coordinated by the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare.
The authorities describe the initiative as a historically important step that could serve as an example for other regions of Cyprus and strengthen international recognition of the island’s natural heritage.
