Cyprus to Host European Maritime Day in 2026

Cyprus has officially been chosen to host European Maritime Day (EMD) in 2026. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of EMD 2025, held in Cork, Ireland.

The event was attended by European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Kostas Kadis. The Cypriot delegation included the Mayor of Limassol, representatives from the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, and other government officials.

EMD 2026 is scheduled to take place on May 21–22 in Limassol, with additional events planned in other coastal cities across the island. The celebration will coincide with Cyprus' presidency of the Council of the European Union. Planning and coordination will be led by the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, working closely with relevant ministries and local authorities.

European Maritime Day, established in 2008 by the European Council, Parliament, and Commission, is an official EU event. Its aim is to raise awareness about the importance of the seas and oceans to European life, and to promote the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources.

“For Cyprus—an island nation with a deep maritime heritage—hosting EMD is a tremendous honor. It’s a chance to showcase our national maritime identity, strengthen our presence on the European stage, and highlight our commitment to a sustainable and forward-looking maritime future,” the statement reads.
