Cyprus Suffocates from Dust: Which Cities Are the Worst Affected?
For the past few days, Cyprus has been under an emergency weather warning due to high levels of dust in the air. Today, dust concentrations have reached their highest levels. The situation is particularly severe in Nicosia, Paphos, and Limassol.
According to air quality monitoring stations from the Department of Labour Inspection, dust levels on March 27th were recorded at dangerously high concentrations.
Here’s the dust concentration by city as of 8:00 AM:
-
Nicosia: 101.6 µg/m³
-
Limassol: 80.8 µg/m³
-
Paphos: 95.6 µg/m³
-
Larnaca: 51.3 µg/m³
-
Paralimni: 29.7 µg/m³
As per local regulations, the average daily dust concentration should not exceed 50 µg/m³ (micrograms per cubic meter).
Since dust contains tiny particles that can negatively impact health, residents—especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions—are strongly advised to stay indoors or limit their time outside until the dust levels decrease.
Employers are also required to assess the risks for workers exposed to the dust and take appropriate measures. Workers are encouraged to use personal protective equipment.
