The Cypriot science documentary Troodos Rising to the Stars has won its first international award, receiving the Best VFX prize at the Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival.

The film tells the story of the Troodos mountain range — from its formation on the ocean floor to the region’s modern connection with astronomy and the study of the Universe. Filming took place at various locations within the Troodos Geopark, while the visual component was enhanced with modern special effects created by an international company based on scientific documentation.

The musical score includes original compositions written specifically for the film, as well as operatic works that enhance the immersive effect.

The documentary project was funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of the CARES programme implemented in Cyprus in 2025.

The film was directed by Stelios Trifon, with production by world-renowned planetarium film creator Theofanis Matsopoulos. Troodos Rising to the Stars is currently screened daily at the Troodos Observatory, offering visitors a modern scientific perspective on the geology and significance of the region.
