Municipal authorities began demolishing illegal structures in the coastal zone of Pervolia on Saturday. The works are being carried out as part of measures taken by the Larnaca municipality in 2024–2025 to remove facilities illegally operating within the protected beach area.

In a written response to a parliamentary inquiry, Minister of the Interior Konstantinos Ioannou stated that the actions are based on the law on coastal protection. An inspection showed that the facilities fall under the legal definition of “building structures.”

Among the demolished structures are seaside bars, as well as an additional space used as a snack bar. Another structure remains the subject of court proceedings.

According to the minister, the final demolition of this structure, including an illegally installed power generator, is possible only after a court decision. He noted that the generator cannot be removed separately without destroying part of the masonry.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the owner or operator of the facility, and the case is currently under the jurisdiction of the Larnaca building authorities.

At the same time, the Dromolaxia municipality has submitted applications to the Department of Lands and Surveys to lease coastal plots owned by the state. The aim is the possible legalization of certain structures, such as kiosks, under reasonable conditions.

The minister emphasized that the authorities’ goal is to achieve a “final and lawful settlement that will put an end to the current practice of arbitrariness.”

These measures are linked to the second phase of the coastal pedestrian promenade project in Pervolia. Ioannou confirmed that all illegal encroachments along the route will be removed.

At the same time, under the beach protection law, exemptions have already been approved allowing the construction of changing rooms, shelters, parking areas and a small kiosk.

The tender for the implementation of the project is planned to be announced in the first quarter of 2026, with construction works scheduled to begin in June 2026.

The estimated cost of the project is €1.5 million: two thirds will be financed by the state, and the remaining part by local authorities.
