The Forestry Department has released three recommendations for the protection of forests and the countryside in Cyprus ahead of the three-day period from February 21–23, coinciding with the Clean Monday celebrations.

The department emphasizes that lighting fires in any natural area is prohibited, except for cooking in specifically authorized and equipped areas within organized picnic and camping sites.

Lighting a fire in state forests or within 2 km of their boundaries is an offense under the Forest Law of 2012 and is punishable by imprisonment for up to 5 years, a fine of up to €25,000, or both. Deliberately causing a fire carries a penalty of up to 12 years in prison, a €100,000 fine, or both simultaneously.

The department asks people to refrain from cutting or uprooting wildflowers and shrubs, as many species are strictly protected, and some are endemic or endangered.

Visitors are encouraged to clean up litter after their outdoor outings, placing it in bins or taking it with them, as even bagged waste will be scattered by stray animals.

Additionally, pine processionary caterpillar infestations have been noted in some areas. It is recommended to avoid staying under infested trees and to avoid contact with the caterpillars or their nests. In case of skin reactions following contact, medical assistance should be sought.
