Limassol has launched a street cat sterilisation program

The Limassol municipality, together with veterinarians and volunteers, has launched a large-scale programme for the sterilisation of street cats. The initiative covers areas with the highest concentration of animals — the Historic Centre, Vathou and Garylli Park. Around 450 female cats and 240 male cats are scheduled to be treated in the near future.
Sterilisation is carried out using a voucher system, which volunteers can obtain at municipal offices. This simplifies the transfer of animals to veterinarians and further record-keeping. The authorities acknowledge that the problem cannot be solved instantly, but regular work will gradually reduce the number of uncontrolled litters and improve conditions both for the animals and for the city’s residents.
The initiative supports a nationwide issue previously announced by the government: there are more than one million stray cats on the island, and mass sterilisation is expected to become a systemic solution.
