Massive Power Outage in Cyprus: AHK Website Could Not Withstand the Load
A large-scale power outage occurred in Cyprus this afternoon, affecting various parts of the island. According to the Cyprus Electricity Authority (ΑΗΚ), the disruption may have been caused by an accident in the northern part of the island, which, through the interconnected electricity system, also impacted the lines serving the free areas.
Official AHK spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou stated that specialists are working to determine the exact cause of the accident and are taking measures to restore electricity supply. According to her, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (DSMC) is in constant contact with emergency units to minimize the consequences and restore normal power supply as soon as possible.
At the same time, the official AHK website became inaccessible. It is assumed that due to the influx of thousands of users trying to obtain information about the incident, the site could not handle the load and temporarily went down.
At present, the exact scale of the disruptions has not been specified — it is still unknown which areas were affected and how much time will be required for the complete restoration of the system. The energy company’s management has urged residents to remain calm and follow further official announcements.
