Ministry of Health calls for cautious use of over-the-counter medicines
The Ministry of Health in Cyprus on September 17, as part of a pan-European campaign, urged patients to use over-the-counter medicines properly, calling to “use medicines wisely.”
The ministry reminded that over-the-counter medicines are intended for the treatment of mild conditions such as pain, fever, or the common cold, but at the same time any medicine may carry risks. Incorrect or unreasonable use of such products may lead to unwanted side effects and even dependence, the ministry noted.
The statement emphasizes the importance of carefully reading the instructions for use and following the directions on the packaging. The campaign is addressed to everyone who occasionally uses over-the-counter medicines, including painkillers, nasal sprays, and expectorant syrups.
Cyprus decided to participate in the campaign of the European Medicines Agency as a member state. The local pharmaceutical association stated that at present there are no specific problems with the misuse of over-the-counter medicines in the republic, but supports initiatives to raise public awareness.
