Minister calls for strengthened implementation of 'Green Deal' during Latsia Lyceum visit
During a visit to Latsia Lyceum in Cyprus on February 20, 2026, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, emphasized the need for the European Union to maintain its leadership in the green transformation and shift toward the practical implementation of existing policies.
According to the ministry, while speaking in the assembly hall, she engaged in a frank and meaningful dialogue with students as part of the school's participation in the 'European Parliament Ambassador Schools' (EPAS) program, focusing on the 'Green Deal', environmental protection, and climate change. The Minister noted the role of education in shaping environmental consciousness and the active participation of youth.
Panayiotou stated that the European Union possesses a comprehensive regulatory framework, and the key task is its execution to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. She stressed that the 'Green Deal' is not a luxury but a collective responsibility for the present and future.
During the discussion, students raised questions about the implementation of European policies, waste recycling, and the issue of water scarcity. The Minister presented the government strategy based on three pillars: infrastructure development (including desalination plants), reducing network losses, and managing demand through conservation measures.
Regarding agriculture, she noted that farmers are particularly feeling the effects of climate change and that incentives for investing in sustainable practices, including the installation of photovoltaic and energy storage systems, are provided under the Common Agricultural Policy.
Panayiotou visited the school vineyard, learned about biodiversity promotion activities, and thanked the students and teachers for their active involvement in EPAS and Erasmus+ projects, highlighting their contribution to forming an environmentally conscious generation.
