Cyprus Health Ministry warns doctors of West Nile virus risk
The Ministry of Health of Cyprus has urged doctors to increase attention to possible cases of West Nile virus due to the period of increased mosquito activity.
A corresponding notice was sent to medical professionals through the Health Insurance Organization's information system. The department reminded that infection with this virus is a reportable disease, so all suspicious or confirmed cases must be reported to the epidemiological surveillance unit.
The virus is primarily transmitted through the bites of infected Culex mosquitoes, which typically become infected from wild birds. The highest number of cases is usually recorded in summer and autumn, when insect activity increases.
According to the Ministry of Health, about 75–80% of those infected have no symptoms. Others may experience fever, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, chills, and other symptoms.
Laboratory confirmation of the infection is conducted at the Nicosia General Hospital and the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.
The ministry emphasized that timely detection and registration of cases are essential for assessing the epidemiological situation and preventing further spread of the disease.
