Plans to Expand Quarry in Akamas

On the Akamas Peninsula, considered one of the most sensitive natural areas of Cyprus, a project is being discussed to expand a quarry for building stone extraction. The documents are under review by the Department of Environmental Protection.
The site is located in the Androlikou area (Paphos district) — according to the project materials, it is in close proximity to a specially protected area and within a Natura 2000 zone. Expansion is planned from the Drushi side, where stone extraction permits are already in place, including one for the same company.
The company states its intention to extract up to 900,000 cubic meters of rock, most of which will be suitable for use. Explosive operations are planned for the development. No on-site processing is planned: the stone will be transported via an existing dirt road to crushing facilities within a radius of less than two kilometers, where it will be washed and crushed — including for road construction and concrete production.
Water resources are another concern: according to the project estimate, the quarry may require up to 90 tons of water per day. The site is located above the Androlikou aquifer and falls within the protection zone of water intake wells.
The environmental assessment lists possible risks — from landscape changes and soil loss to dust, noise, and heavy truck traffic. Impact on flora and fauna is expected primarily in the immediate extraction zone.
Akamas has long been a territory of conflict between proponents of economic development and environmental organizations, which regularly oppose projects that could alter the natural landscape. The company, in turn, promises reclamation after the completion of operations and planting of local plant species, as well as maintaining jobs and supporting the construction sector.
