Winter is coming to Cyprus: prolonged rains will begin next week

From November 12–13, the island will be under the influence of a low-pressure system: rain, thunderstorms and the first signs of winter are expected. Rainfall will be heavy in some mountain and coastal areas. The atmospheric front will bring moisture and gradual cooling.
Director of the Meteorological Department Filippos Tymvios noted: “For the first time this autumn, we will feel real cool weather.” The long-awaited rains will help replenish soil moisture and improve water resources affected by prolonged drought.
October — one of the driest According to Tymvios, October 2025 was among the 44 driest months since records began. A precipitation deficit was observed throughout the eastern Mediterranean. However, the situation is already changing in November: 13.7 mm fell in Lythrodontas (32% of the norm), and 15.4 mm in Lefkara.
Cold from the ocean: the influence of “La Niña” This year, the “La Niña” phenomenon — cooling of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean — has intensified again. According to the World Meteorological Organization, it alters global air flows, affecting rainfall and temperatures even in remote regions. In Europe, such phases are often accompanied by cold spells and snowy winters.
Climatologists note that the phenomenon has appeared since the beginning of the decade, especially strongly in 2022. The UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science confirms — during “La Niña”, winter forecasts become more accurate and temperature fluctuations sharper.
For Cyprus this means potential unpredictability: even short-term changes in global circulation can bring cold snaps against a background of overall dryness.
