Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds are illegally killed annually in Cyprus — Deutsche Welle
The German publication Deutsche Welle reported that hundreds of thousands of migratory birds are illegally killed and sold annually in Cyprus, ending up on tables as a traditional dish, the outlet writes.
A Deutsche Welle journalist accompanied Andrea Rutiliani from the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) in areas where bird traps are set. According to the report, regular clashes occur between activists and poachers across the quiet autumn landscapes of the island, with threats and attacks often used against the latter.
The publication notes that "ampelopoulia" usually refers to small songbirds that are either grilled or deep-fried whole. Despite the ban on selling and consuming such birds under European and Cypriot law, demand remains high, making poaching profitable.
Activists are using modern technology and advocating for stricter legislation. The article emphasizes that stopping mass trapping is possible if there is political will to implement existing promises and measures.
