Allergy Season Begins in Cyprus
With the arrival of spring, seasonal colds and infections in Cyprus have been replaced by a rise in allergies. Doctors are also predicting an increase in gastrointestinal illnesses and gastroenteritis.
According to Abraham Elias, the director of the Makarios Children’s Clinic, spring marks the beginning of the active blooming season, and many children are expected to experience allergic reactions.
"We expect a significant number of children may need to be hospitalized due to reactions to various seasonal allergens," the doctor noted.
Currently, Makarios Hospital is operating at 60% capacity, as cases of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and flu type A have not yet declined.
Another significant cause of hospitalization for children is microbial pneumonia, primarily caused by pneumococcus, which continues to affect many children. Several have required hospitalization in pediatric wards, with four children currently being treated.
The hospital also reports that the majority of patients are infants under two years old. Doctors expect conditions to improve in the coming weeks, with a decrease in hospitalizations for respiratory infections.
